Artists Story: MINA MINA JUKURRPA – (MINA MINA DREAMING)
The country associated with this painting is Mina Mina, a place far west of Yuendumu, significant to Napangardi and Napanangka women who are the custodians of the Jukurrpa that created the area. 
The Dreaming describes the journey of a group of women of all ages who travelled east gathering food, collecting Ngalyipi (snake vine) and performing ceremonies as they travelled. The women began their journey at Mina Mina where Karlangu (digging sticks) emerged from the ground. Taking these implements the women travelled east creating Janyinki and other sites. Their journey took them eventually beyond Warlpiri country. In contemporary Warlpiri paintings traditional iconography is used to represent the Jukurrpa, associated sites and other elements. 
The primary motif used in paintings of the Jukurrpa are the Karlangu digging sticks which rose up out of the ground at Mina Mina. The women used them to collect bush tucker on their travels. 
This painting shows the motion of the digging sticks as the women move them to dig.

Australian Indigenous peoples do not come from a manufacturing culture, so these products are hand produced with help from traditional artisans from remote regions in Kashmir, Peru, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh and Nepal (Tibetan refugees) and more.

Chainstitch is the traditional handicraft of the Kashmiri community and they are produced in remote villages and provide an important economic income between harvests and other rural work.
The wool is dyed in situ and groups of people gather in local homes surrounded by family and friends, to work.
The stitching is done by hand using an 'aari' a sharp hooked tool similar to a crochet hook.This product is produced with the help of Better World Arts.

Better World Arts has been operating for over two decades. Initially, working with traditional handicrafts. In 1996 we invited Aboriginal artists to join our projects and soon after decided to focus on the Aboriginal art side of the projects and left the normal handicrafts to others like Oxfam. 

Artisans benefit from royalties paid to them on a monthly basis and Art centres benefit from a substantial profit share paid on their investments, and by having culturally appropriate opportunities, they are able to supplement rural income by practising age old traditions in their own homes located in remote beautiful clean villages.  We have created sustainable lives for artisans and we have paid artists millions of dollars over the last decade alone.

As Aboriginals are not from industrious manufacturing backgrounds, We work with traditional artisans from remote regions in Kashmir, Peru, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh and Nepal (Tibetan refugees). More recently we have started working with China, making bone China and silk ties.

We unite the traditional handicrafts produced by cultures steeped in artisanal traditions with artwork from Australian Aboriginal artists from remote communities across Australia, from Arnhem Land to Central and the Western Desert regions, from rural locations and from cities.  More lately we have started working with non indigenous Australian artists that represent quintessential Australian themes.  Better World Arts is strongly involved in local community educational programs and projects, working with schools and clinics to increase awareness and health.
