๐ŸŒˆ About Brenda Wood

Brenda Wood is a textile artist, colour enthusiast, and founder ofย 2 Sew Textiles โ€” home of Art Quilt Supplies, an online store dedicated to inspiring quilters and textile artists with beautiful materials and creative challenges.

Her work celebrates the intersection of art, design, and storytelling through fabric. Whether sheโ€™s dyeing cloth, painting with thread, or piecing vibrant modern quilts, Brendaโ€™s approach is playful yet purposeful โ€” guided by a deep curiosity for texture, pattern, and the natural world.

๐Ÿงต A Journey Stitched with Colour

Brenda began her creative practice as a way to explore form and colour through cloth. Over time, her studio practice evolved into a platform for sharing that love with others. Through her online shop and popular project series, sheโ€™s built a community of makers who connect through curiosity, experimentation, and joy.

Since 2020, Brenda has developed a series of subscription and community projects designed to encourage creative play and colour exploration:

  • Workshop in a Box (2020 โ€“ 2022) โ€” a hands-on introduction to textile techniques.
  • Rainbow Stash Builder (2022 โ€“ 2023) โ€” a curated colour journey through monthly fabric and thread selections.
  • Rainbow Stash Buster (2024) โ€” a challenge that culminated in a public exhibition of 365 textile works created by 23 contributors.
  • Rainbow Stash Hero Challenge (2025) โ€” this yearโ€™s ongoing project featuring one Hero Colour and a Textile Technique Word Prompt each month.

Brendaโ€™s projects encourage participants to work small, think freely, and build skills while celebrating individual style.

In the Studio

Brendaโ€™s textile art explores the stories, structures, and rhythms of the natural and human-made world. Her compositions often trace the flow of rivers and coastlines, the shifting patterns of weather, and the delicate balance of organic systems.

Recent works includeย the โ€œSerious Conversationsโ€ series, which uses textile portraiture to reflect on cultural identity, social change, and the lives of remarkable women. Within this body of work, her ongoing collection โ€œWomenโ€™s Workโ€ celebrates women who have made extraordinary contributions to science, art, and society โ€” often in fields that once excluded them. Painted in acrylic inks and interpreted in cloth, the portraits combine colour, caricature, and symbolism to invite viewers into deeper reflectionBrendaโ€™s work continues to evolve, blending traditional quilt-making with contemporary surface design, stitch, and mixed media. Her pieces have been exhibited in both community and curated art spaces, where they invite connection, conversation, and joy.

Serious Conversations

Parallel to her bright, collaborative work runs another thread โ€” Brendaโ€™s Serious Conversations series, an evolving body of textile art that explores deeper human themes through stitched storytelling. One of the most striking works in this series appeared in Art Quilt Australia 2021: a piece addressing PTSD, inspired by the poem Stand Fast by Ian Coate. Brenda translated the poem into Morse code, stitching it across the surface to symbolise the fragmented communication and silent endurance experienced by many who live with trauma.

Other works in the series reflect more personal domestic dialogues โ€” serious conversations with two of her sons about shared responsibilities, priorities, and perspectives within family life. These pieces are layered with humour, empathy, and reflection, transforming ordinary exchanges into textured visual narratives.

๐Ÿ’ฌ A Creative Philosophy

At the heart of Brendaโ€™s work is the belief that textiles are for telling stories โ€” personal, environmental, and social. Her goal is to create spaces where makers feel empowered to experiment, share ideas, and find joy in the process of making.

As she says:

โ€œColour connects us. Fabric is simply the language we use to speak it.โ€

๐ŸŒ Beyond the Studio

Through her online store, 2 Sew Textiles (artquiltsupplies.com), Brenda supports fellow makers with carefully curated art and quilt supplies. Her shop has become a hub for those seeking materials that inspire experimentation โ€” inks, fabrics, threads, and tools chosen for their potential to spark creative momentum.

Whether teaching, curating, or creating, Brendaโ€™s work reflects an ongoing dialogue between colour, concept, and community. Each project โ€” from vibrant rainbow challenges to stitched reflections on lifeโ€™s complexities โ€” invites others to join her in that conversation.
